TOWN OF SMITHS FALLS TO HOST EVACUEES |
Smiths Falls will be receiving approximately 500 evacuees from the northern Ontario community of the Deer Lake First Nations which is threatened by wildfire. These evacuees will be composed primarily of seniors, families with children and their pets. The Mayor has declared a state of emergency and the Emergency Control Group met this morning to coordinate response and services to meet the needs of these evacuees. “We are well positioned to respond to the needs of these individuals who will be housed at the former Rideau Regional Centre” stated Mayor Staples. Members of the public should contact the information centre (Town hall 613-283-4124, ext. 1171) with any inquiries or if they wish to volunteer assistance. Please be aware that due to the high volume of calls expected, it may be difficult to get through.
Further updates will be provided to the community as we move forward. -30- Regards,
Kimberley L. Leach Rathwell
